Sergio Bustos

Sergio Bustos is a senior editor for POLITICO States.

He was a reporter for more than 20 years, including six as a Washington correspondent. He was an editor for 10 years, including five as The Miami Herald’s state/politics editor. He shared in the McClatchy President's award for a story exposing campaign fraud in a congressional primary race.

At the Herald, he oversaw staff in Tallahassee, Washington and Miami, including POLITICO’s Marc Caputo, and was part of an award-winning partnership with The Tampa Bay Times in covering the statehouse in Tallahassee, and as an editor with PolitiFact.

He spent the last year as part of a team of reporters at The Associated Press covering the 2016 presidential campaign. He helped cover Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio until they suspended their campaigns earlier this year.

Born in Chile and raised in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., Sergio attended public school in northern Virginia and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Sergio has been married for more than 20 years and has two daughters, ages 11 and 18. They live in South Florida.
