Alex Nieves is the California transportation reporter at POLITICO and is part of the team behind California Climate, a daily newsletter about how the politics of climate change are shaping the future of the state.
Alex has nearly a decade of experience covering California politics and policy issues including cannabis, labor and trade. He has also reported on the state Legislature and the 2022 Los Angeles mayor’s race.
As California transportation reporter, Alex was the first to report the West Coast Teamsters break with its national chapter in endorsing Kamala Harris for president. He regularly chronicles power dynamics and policy fights between influential California unions like the Teamsters and its top elected officials.
He closely tracks other major storylines on his beat from Elon Musk’s tussles with state regulatory agencies to fights over California’s zero-emission rules for trucks and trains.
Before joining POLITICO, he worked for Sports Illustrated and interned with the Los Angeles Daily News and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. A Los Angeles native, Alex holds a master’s degree from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and a B.A. in Diplomacy & World Affairs from Occidental College.
